Season nine of EMU Today TV began by featuring two new deans at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) who discussed their plans to drive innovation and support student-focused changes. Dean Amy Hietapelto of the College of Business and Dean Carol Bishop Mills of the College of Arts and Sciences shared their backgrounds and goals for their respective colleges.

Dean Hietapelto, who has nearly three decades of experience in higher education, highlighted her ties to Michigan and her background in both business and academia. She is a first-generation college graduate and previously worked in corporate roles at IBM, Merrill Lynch, and Smith Barney. Before joining EMU, she served as the business dean at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

“I’m drawn to institutions like EMU that serve first-generation students and prioritize access, opportunity, and regional impact,” Hietapelto said. “Education changed the trajectory of my life—and my family’s—and I’m excited to be part of that transformative work here in Ypsilanti.”

Hietapelto noted the determination of EMU students, stating, “Our students succeed and excel, often despite significant challenges. That’s a testament to their resilience and the quality of our programs.” She aims to raise the profile of the College of Business by highlighting achievements such as above-average CPA pass rates and a strong student SHRM chapter.

She announced that Pierce Hall will undergo renovations and become the new home for the College of Business by fall 2027. The project will focus first on spaces for students, including advising, career services, and community collaboration areas, followed by an atrium and expanded labs. Faculty and administrative offices will be updated later.

“We’re building a space that reflects our commitment to student success and community engagement,” Hietapelto said. “It’s more than a building—it’s a hub for innovation, connection, and opportunity.”

Hietapelto also mentioned ongoing reviews of academic programs to ensure they remain relevant and accessible. The college has launched a new undergraduate wealth management program, with additional initiatives planned.

Dean Carol Bishop Mills recently joined EMU after serving as Associate Dean of Faculty Success at Florida Atlantic University. She has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and is also a first-generation college graduate. Mills previously held leadership positions at the University of Alabama and Northern Illinois University.

“I’m thrilled to be part of a university that truly centers first-generation students and those from underrepresented backgrounds,” Mills said. “EMU faculty take that responsibility seriously, and the level of engagement here is unlike anything I’ve seen.”

Mills has engaged with campus activities and met with faculty and students across departments to understand the university culture. She commented on the close relationships between students and faculty: “What strikes me most is the one-on-one relationships students have with faculty. Whether it’s science expeditions, creative writing mentorships, or weekend activities, the commitment here is extraordinary.”

She discussed the importance of arts and sciences degrees in preparing students for a changing workforce by developing skills such as critical thinking and adaptability. Mills also spoke about the value of general education: “Gen ed made me a better human,” she said. “It gave me the tools to connect with people, understand diverse perspectives, and lead with empathy.”

Mills plans to focus on building partnerships across campus and with external stakeholders during her first year. “My first year is about rethinking our purpose and expanding our connections with stakeholders, foundations, and industry,” she said.

Both deans emphasized their commitment to enhancing EMU’s reputation, expanding student opportunities, and strengthening ties with alumni, employers, and the region.

EMU Today TV is produced by Vice President for Communications Walter Kraft and hosted by EMU alum Mark S. Lee. The show highlights programs and events important to the EMU community.
