Ypsilanti, the location of Eastern Michigan University (EMU), has been recognized as one of the Best College Towns in America for 2025 by WalletHub. The ranking assessed over 400 college cities and towns across the United States, using criteria such as affordability, social environment, and opportunities related to academics and the economy. Key factors included housing costs, quality of higher education, and rental availability.
“Ypsilanti has something for everyone,” said Gray Connor, a senior studying media studies and journalism. “Unique shops in Depot Town, diverse restaurants, and a lot of exciting community events. There are also many beautiful parks and trails to explore.”
The city received positive ratings for its affordability and social atmosphere. Local attractions like Depot Town, downtown Ypsilanti, and the Huron River remain popular among residents and visitors due to their lively settings and historical significance.
Eastern Michigan University has been part of Ypsilanti since 1849. Originally established as Michigan State Normal School with a focus on teacher education, EMU now offers a broad array of programs. The university highlights its impact on the local community through initiatives such as Engage@EMU, which builds connections between community organizations and businesses.
In recent years, EMU has invested in campus improvements by adding two new student housing complexes—Lakeview Apartments and Westview Apartments—and renovating all other residence halls. The university also created new green spaces where former residence halls once stood to support student well-being.
Academic facilities have seen upgrades as well; renovations at the 3D Arts Complex, Pierce Hall, and Roosevelt Hall reflect EMU’s commitment to providing collaborative learning environments.
“Since starting at Eastern, everyone I have come in contact with genuinely cares about my success as a student and gaining meaningful experience during my time here,” said Alexis Torres, a senior studying public relations. “I’ve made many great friends in classes and events. I also feel supported by my professors to do my best and prepare for my future career as they are always there to help with whatever I need.”
