Eastern Michigan University has received the Pioneering Partner Award from Global Ties Detroit, recognizing the university's first year of partnership with the organization. The award was presented during Global Ties Detroit’s Annual Dinner on October 23 at the Guardian Building in Detroit.
EMU was chosen for its support of two international exchange programs in 2025: hosting an International Visitor Leadership Program delegation from Mauritania and an Open World Leadership Program delegation from Ukraine. These visits provided opportunities for students, faculty, and guests to engage in cross-cultural learning and dialogue.
University President James Smith accepted the award on behalf of EMU. “It is a tremendous honor to receive the Pioneering Partner Award from Global Ties Detroit,” said President Smith. “At Eastern Michigan University, we believe deeply in the power of international exchange to build understanding, spark innovation, and strengthen communities. Welcoming delegations from Mauritania and Ukraine this year was a privilege, and we look forward to continuing this important work in the years ahead.”
Global Ties Detroit described EMU’s involvement as exemplary among first-time partners contributing to its mission of promoting citizen diplomacy and international exchange.
The university’s participation aligns with its broader commitment to preparing students for leadership roles in a global context. Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University is Michigan's second-oldest public university and currently enrolls more than 12,000 students across undergraduate through doctoral programs. EMU offers over 300 academic options through several colleges and emphasizes career readiness by providing hands-on learning experiences and personalized support.
