State Sen. Lana Theis (R-Brighton Township) in convinced the budget recently approved by state lawmakers is a step in the right direction.
“Today the legislature once again demonstrated that we can come together to approve a budget that provides record funding for schools and roads while continuing to support other vital interests like public health and safety, and our natural resources – all without new or higher taxes, which residents in our district overwhelmingly oppose,” Theis posted on Facebook on Sept. 24. “I encourage the governor to consider this and sign the budget bills to avoid an unnecessary government shutdown.”
By Theis’ account, the proposed budget plan seeks to invest upward of a record-setting $15 billion in K-12 education with a foundation allowance boost of up to $240 per student. Additionally, $522 million is earmarked to help at-risk students and another $60 million is set aside to increase the budget for special education.
