Washtenaw County residents may get to enjoy the third-largest average tax returns in the state, according to a financial study conducted by SmartAsset.
The financial tech company used Internal Revenue Service data to determine that the average Ann Arbor resident receives $2,814 each tax season. Washtenaw County superseded Oakland and Wayne counties, whose residents receive $2,996 and $2,887 each tax return season, respectively.
SmartAsset found the average tax return amounts by taking the total amount of money refunded in each Michigan county divided by the number of tax returns issued. The research company used the same method to determine the average amount of taxes owed, for which Washtenaw County also ranked third, with the average taxpayer owing $6,070 in taxes each year.
SmartAsset offers interactive maps to see these averages for each county, as well as fill-in-the-blank tax refund calculators to help users estimate what they will owe and what they might receive back.
