39,567 in California, including 1,530 deaths.
7,048 in the Bay Area, including 243 deaths.
869,172 in the U.S., including 49,963 deaths. The five states with the highest death tolls are New York with 20,982; New Jersey with 5,426; Michigan with 2,977; Massachusetts with 2,360 and Pennsylvania with 1,724.
