Eastern Michigan University recently recognized outstanding students, student organizations, and advisors at the 29th annual Student Gold Medallion Awards. The event took place on March 25 and highlighted those who contribute significantly to the university’s vibrant campus life.
The awards received 198 nominations this year, spotlighting 98 unique individuals and student organizations. These nominees exemplified excellence in leadership, service, and campus involvement.
Brandon Brown, Caroline Buxton, and AnnaBelle Favre received the Rising Star Award. According to his nominator, Brandon Brown "lights up campus with his sense of humor and interpersonal skills, making him a natural leader." AnnaBelle Favre was praised for her "enthusiasm, intelligence, and commitment to fostering joy in learning." Caroline Buxton demonstrated "exceptional leadership skills and commitment to enhancing campus culture."
The Eagle Ambassador Award went to Nina Freeman and Ryen Padilla. Freeman was recognized for "building connections, advocating for diversity, and engaging with both the campus and local communities." Padilla, described as having the "ability to manage multiple responsibilities," excelled in research and other endeavors.
Jason Folk won the Community Engagement Award for his "commitment to promoting civic engagement and advancing social justice."
Hannah Ihrig and Christina Trotta received the Exemplary Workplace Integrity Award. Ihrig was acknowledged for fostering an "inclusive, accountable environment," while Trotta’s leadership was noted for creating "lasting change."
Sara Rayan was given the Mentorship Award for her work with international students, notably for identifying support gaps and presenting solutions.
Exemplary Leadership Awards were given to Jesse John, Naomi Barbour, and Sri Vakulabharanam. John's work in psychology research and leadership were highlighted, along with Barbour's commitment to public service and Vakulabharanam's contributions to the growth of EMU Esports.
The Glenna Frank Miller Leadership Scholarship Award was awarded to Michala Johnson, praised for her efforts in leadership and mentorship.
Jessica Lyseng and Trinity Perkins were acknowledged with the Inclusive Excellence Award for contributions to service, cultural competency, and student wellness.
Student organizations also received accolades. The Black Honors Student Organization was recognized with the Empowerment Through Unity Award. Bekah Whitehead and Dr. Jessica Grimone-Hopkins were named Exemplary Student Organization Advisors. The International Student Association won the Exemplary Student Organization Event Award, and the Kings of Color and the National Student Association for Speech-Language and Hearing Tri Sigma Omicron Chapter were recognized.
