Ypsilanti is beginning to utilize sidewalks and streets in downtown for businesses and restaurants.
The City Council approved a plan that will allow the Downtown Development Authority to close streets and sidewalks for businesses and restaurants to expand outside, CBS Detroit reported. Restaurants will be able to allow dine-in with the outdoor space and social-distance their tables.
Businesses in downtown Ypsilanti, Washington, south Washington, West Cross Street ad East Cross Street can apply for a permit to expand onto sidewalks and streets. But a street won't be closed for expansion unless at least two businesses on the street apply for the permit.
Many businesses in the area have been impacted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home order and numerous COVID-19-related executive orders. These permits will help the businesses serve additional customers.
Ann Arbor has already seen a similar plan put into place, and the city is considering more for Main, Washington, Liberty, Maynard, State, Detroit, Church and South University Avenue, CBS Detroit reported.
