A decision was made earlier to close the wooden vehicle bridge in Gallup Park to all traffic (vehicles and pedestrians). During a routine inspection, the vehicle bridge was found to have significant structural issues that might pose a risk of failure and should not be crossed for any reason. Due to safety concerns, the City of Ann Arbor is preparing to demolish the existing bridge beginning Monday, Feb. 12.

“Our plan had been to keep the existing bridge open until construction of the new bridge was complete. Having to close the bridge now is very unfortunate. We know this shutdown will impact community members who rely on it as part of their commute to school and work as well as the park itself. Restoring bridge access is our highest priority and we have all hands-on deck investigating options to get us through until the new bridge is complete," said Hillary Hanzel, Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation park planner and landscape architect.

“The City of Ann Arbor is working with utmost urgency to find a solution to this issue as quickly as possible, and we are investigating all options, including the potential for a temporary crossing until the new bridge is constructed. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this issue," added Hanzel. For all the details about the project and future updates visit https://www.a2gov.org/departments/Parks-Recreation/administrative/Pages/Park-Planning.aspx.
