Eastern Michigan University recently dedicated new offices for its Center for Jewish Studies in Halle Library, honoring the contributions of Art and Mary Schuman. The dedication ceremony on September 24, 2024, was attended by several guests, including EMU President James Smith and honoree Mary Schuman.

The event celebrated the growth of the Center since its founding in 2012. Highlights included a plaque unveiling and mezuzah installation led by Rabbi Cain. Afterward, attendees toured the new space and enjoyed a reception.

Mary Schuman expressed her gratitude during the event: “Art and I have had the opportunity to meet and hear incredible Jewish leaders, authors, and performers,” she said. “We are honored to be a part of this wonderful center and to have a plaque in our honor in this beautiful office.”

Robert Erlewine, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at EMU, thanked Art and Mary Schuman for their significant impact as founding members. Both serve on the Advisory Board and are donors to the Center. The annual Art and Mary Schuman Lecture Series will hold its next event on September 30.

The Center aims to foster understanding among various ethnic communities at EMU by providing educational opportunities about Jews and Judaism.

Eastern Michigan University serves over 13,000 students across various disciplines. It is recognized nationally for excellence, diversity, and commitment to applied education.
