Eastern Michigan University is addressing student food insecurity with a new initiative called "Stock Swoop's Shelves." The campaign, running from March 10 to 28, aims to gather essential supplies and food items for students in need. This effort seeks to alleviate the stress of food insecurity so students can focus on their education.
Julie Harkema, faculty advisor for Swoop's Food Pantry, explained the goal: "The pantry aims to get at least 60 groups to sign up for the ‘Stock Swoop's Shelves’ event to meet the increasing need for resources to best serve students who rely on the pantry.” She noted that last year's campaign successfully stocked shelves with a variety of goods not usually available.
Participation is open to everyone, both on and off campus. Groups are encouraged to organize themed donation drives, such as pasta night or dental hygiene collections. Volunteers can sign up or contribute financially.
Swoop’s Pantry plays a crucial role in supporting students and their families. An Eastern student shared their experience: “Without this assistance, I would not be able to give my child meals as healthy or balanced as I have been with the help of Swoop’s.”
