Eastern Michigan University held its 2025 Distinguished Faculty and Lecturer Awards Celebration on March 25, acknowledging the notable contributions of faculty and lecturers. These awards highlight excellence in teaching, research, and service.
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Rhonda Longworth commented on the achievements: “Through their unwavering dedication to students, their departments, and EMU as a whole, each of these honorees has inspired colleagues and students alike. Many received multiple nominations, a testament to the far-reaching impact of their work. EMU would not be what it is without the passion and commitment they bring to their roles. It is an honor to celebrate them today.”
The Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards and the EMU-FT Full-Time and Part-Time Lecturer Teaching Awards represent the highest faculty honors at the university. Recipients are determined through a meticulous selection process.
This year’s award recipients for the EMUFT Lecturer Distinguished Teaching Awards are Maria Goodrich from the biology department and Jennifer Felts from Communication, Media & Theatre Arts. Goodrich was praised for enhancing courses with practical assignments and mentoring graduate assistants. Felts was highlighted for creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
The Ronald Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards were given to several faculty members. Lon Mitchell, an assistant professor in Mathematics and Statistics, received the Distinguished Teaching Award I. One student's nomination emphasized his talent for making complex concepts accessible. Chris Gellasch, a professor of Geology and Geography, won the Distinguished Teaching Award II. His ability to apply lessons to real-world scenarios and his involvement in various student activities were praised.
Matthew Kautz, an assistant professor in Leadership and Counseling, was recognized with the Distinguished Faculty Award - Research I for his productivity and contributions to educational movements. John McCurdy, a professor of History and Philosophy, earned the Distinguished Faculty Award – Research II for integrating societal norms into his scholarly work.
Jeromy Hopgood, a professor in Communication, Media & Theatre Arts, received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Creativity due to his role in establishing the Entertainment Design Major at EMU. Audrey Farrugia, a professor in Special Education and Communications Sciences and Disorders, was given the Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, being recognized as a leader committed to justice and equity.
