State of emergency UPDATE

State of emergency

City of Milan issued the following announcement on Aug 12.

**UPDATE** I wanted to update everyone on our state of emergency.

To begin, there was no loss of life, nor was there any serious injuries reported related to the storm.

At approximately 2:55 PM, Milan 911 began receiving calls related to the storm.

What appears to have been straight-line winds blew through the City. We have numerous power lines down and I would estimate approximately 60% of the City is without power. The mitigation of the power lines is hampered by numerous trees down and multiple utility poles destroyed by the winds. Businesses, apartment buildings, homes have sustained roof damage, as well as public spaces impacted.

The Mayor declared a state of emergency within the City. Both Washtenaw and Monroe County Emergency Management offices have been notified of our state of emergency and are coordinating with us for mitigation and recovery.

Mayor Hamden and myself have surveyed every area of the City. The damage is severe in some cases, and the entire City is feeling the impact of the storm.

I wanted to say a few words regarding what I observed during the storm today. The incredible amount of neighborly love and helping each other was remarkable. I observed all of our Councilpersons out helping, neighbors were helping neighbors. Strangers were helping strangers and the entire City came together during this event to help an care for each other. It was simply inspiring. Our Police, Fire and DPW workers worked many difficult hours to keep you safe, They were awesome and deserve your praise.

I also want to thank Saline and Dundee for sending help our way. Police, Fire, and DPW from each jurisdiction was sent to help. We simply couldn’t have done it without them.

For now, everyone is safe. We have more clean-up to do tomorrow, and more work on the state of emergency with the Counties.

I know there is a desire to go out tonight, and at first light to see just what happened to our City. I want to caution everyone: THERE ARE STILL HOT POWER LINES DOWN. Please do not assume any wire you see down is safe, it is not. I encourage everyone to stay inside tonight and in the morning, if it is safe to do so at your home, until we can get a handle on all of the hot wires.

Your City will be monitoring events tonight, and the mitigation and recovery will resume in the morning. If there are more, or, urgent updates, we will post them here.

Stay safe, stay careful.
