National Public Works Week!

A

It’s National Public Works Week! Ann Arbor is recognizing the occasion with information about our own public works department operations. Today, we’re sharing solid waste facts:

- Public Works staff collected 7,526 tons of compost and 47,347 tons of trash in 2021 (calendar year).

- Fiscal year-to-date 2022, the Solid Waste Team has:

o Delivered over 629 trash, recycling and/or compost carts.

o Repaired over 88 trash, recycling and/or compost carts, which supports ongoing sustainability efforts by repairing and reusing materials when ever possible.

- Residents are also able to pick up carts from Larcom City Hall or Wheeler Service Center. Our customer service and Wheeler administrative assistant teams have serviced over 470 cart pick ups year to date.

- There are 17 solid waste trucks in the Public Works fleet, with 1 electric truck to be added later this calendar year and more additions to follow.

- Twice a year, the city’s Public Works unit staffs a trash, recycling and drop-off site during spring and fall student move in and move out. In 2021 these events:

o Hauled 64.49 tons of trash and 10.8 tons of recycling from the site.

o Diverted 653 mattresses from the landfill.

o Kiwanis partnered with the city and removed 6 box trucks full of reusable household items to their store, giving back to the community in countless ways.

o The city offers additional cart/dumpster tips (service) during these times. In 2021, this equated to an additional 73.24 tons of trash serviced by our Solid Waste drivers.
