The Ann Arbor bicentennial is in 2024; and the city is now seeking an artist to help commemorate the historic occasion. Artists are invited to submit proposals to design a mural in recognition of the city's 200 years: past, present and future. One selected artist will receive a $25,000 contract with the city for the purchase and installation of their design on two basketball courts located in city parks. Two runners-up will each receive $500.

Proposals must be submitted by email to bicentennialmurals@a2gov.org by 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2024. All proposals are to include:

  • A photo or sketch of the proposed design, which must be original artwork. All designs must incorporate the existing Ann Arbor Bicentennial logo (as shown at https://a2bicentennial.org/).
  • A narrative section describing:
  1. The design's inspiration.
  2. The proposed installation process.
  3. The artist's connection with the Ann Arbor community.
  4. A proposed itemized budget.
Further information and all requirements can be found in the “call for artist proposals" document on the bicentennial mural webpage, www.a2gov.org/bicentennialmurals.

The Ann Arbor Bicentennial Murals Committee will select three designs from the submitted proposals. The finalist designs will be displayed online and at Larcom City Hall beginning Friday, March 15, 2024. Community members can then vote on their favorite among the three designs to help the committee select the winner, to be announced in May 2024.

The selected artist will install their design on the basketball courts at Bicentennial Park (formerly Southeast Area Park) and Leslie Park in summer 2024. The community will be invited to participate in the painting process, with volunteer painting events planned by the city.
