Eastern Michigan University will welcome more than 2,500 residential students for move-in weekend from Thursday, Aug. 22, through Saturday, Aug. 24. Classes for the entire EMU student population begin on Monday, Aug. 26.

Residential students will find two new apartment buildings featuring studio, one-, two-, and four-bedroom units—all fully furnished and equipped with new appliances. The apartments include air conditioning, dishwashers, and WiFi.

Eastern Michigan plans to create a lively move-in experience for students and families with a welcome tent that includes a DJ, giveaways, and snacks.

“This year is the culmination of Welcome Home: Campus Living Redefined, a $200 million initiative to transform EMU’s residential experience,” said Jeanette Zalba, director of Housing and Residence Life at Eastern Michigan University. “We completed two new residence halls and renovated five. Virtually all buildings have received upgrades in some fashion.”

Renovated residence hall rooms now feature air conditioning, enhanced WiFi, and updated lounge and study spaces.

To support incoming students during the move-in process, 100 trained student resident advisors and office managers will provide assistance. Incoming students can expect to meet their personal resident advisor after moving in during a floor meeting designed to introduce them to their neighbors.

“It’s always a pleasure to welcome new and returning students to their home on campus,” said EMU student Guoro Koita, central office manager for Housing and Residence Life. “The enthusiasm of everyone preparing for a fresh start is infectious.”

Post move-in activities include pizza and a movie at the Lakehouse Amphitheater on Aug. 22 at 8 p.m., followed by EMU Connect on Aug. 23—a three-day orientation for freshmen.

Looking ahead, Koita expressed optimism about the new semester: “I believe the new spaces will provide an even better environment for everyone to thrive in. Here’s to a great fall semester!”
