Eastern Michigan University is set to participate in the "Detroit, Selma, and the Civil Rights Movement" symposium aimed at exploring the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and addressing contemporary social justice issues. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, via Zoom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., co-sponsored by EMU’s Department of Africology and African American Studies and the EMU Civil Rights and Social Justice Center.

“In a moment where voting rights, Black Studies, and other hard-won gains of the Civil Rights Movement are under attack, this program offers a critical opportunity to learn from Movement veterans and fortify ongoing struggles for Black liberation,” said Peter Blackmer, assistant professor for EMU’s Department of Africology and African American Studies.

The symposium will feature an impressive lineup of Civil Rights Movement veterans and expert speakers. Attendees can expect deep insights into the historical connections between Detroit and Selma as well as critical dialogue on the future of civil rights, social justice, and voting rights.
