Eastern Michigan University has announced Brandon Brown from Southfield, Michigan, as a 2024 Presidential Scholar. Brown is among 21 students selected for this honor, recognizing first-year students who excel academically and show leadership and community commitment.
The EMU Presidential Scholarship is the university's top award, valued at up to $100,000. It covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years. Recipients are active in The Honors College at EMU, enhancing their academic experience with opportunities for critical thinking and leadership.
"This award means so much to me, especially because people who come from my area and look like me aren't expected to get such a high-achieving award," said Brown. "I hope to inspire and set an example for people like me to aim high and achieve big."
Brown graduated from Wylie E Groves High School and plans to study computer science. He aims for a career in software or mobile app development. In high school, he was part of the National Honor Society and his school's basketball team. He also tutored middle school students.
Brown appreciates the financial freedom the scholarship provides. “Because of this award, I can focus on my studies without the burden of paying for classes and having financial problems,” he said. At EMU, he is involved with the National Society of Black Engineers and the Information Assurance Student Association.
"We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU and the Honors College this fall,” said Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, but they all share a passion for learning, service, and leadership.”
The scholarship aligns with EMU's mission to promote student success so they can achieve academic goals while impacting the world positively.
Students can apply for this scholarship during their senior year of high school.
Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines through its colleges. It is recognized nationally for excellence in education.
