Eastern Michigan University has been acknowledged for its environmental efforts by being included in The Princeton Review's 2025 Guide to Green Colleges. This marks the second consecutive year that the university has been recognized for its sustainability initiatives.
The guide features 511 institutions noted for their sustainable programs and practices. Eastern Michigan University (EMU) received a Green Rating of 82, reflecting its dedication to environmental responsibility. The university's sustainability measures include recycling, conservation, renewable energy use, and courses on environmental studies aimed at preparing students to address current ecological challenges.
Thomas Kovacs, an EMU professor of Meteorology and former chair of the President's Commission on Sustainability at EMU, stated: “Eastern Michigan University's recognition in The Princeton Review’s Green Colleges list highlights our strong dedication to sustainability." He added that their ongoing initiatives are driving real change toward a more sustainable future.
Kovacs also expressed delight at being featured in the guide, saying: "Sustainability is a core part of our mission, and this recognition validates our ongoing efforts to create a greener, more environmentally responsible campus for our students and the broader community."
A study conducted by The Princeton Review found that 61% of nearly 8,000 surveyed students indicated that a college's environmental commitment influences their decision to apply or attend. EMU has been dedicated to sustainability since the early 2000s with advancements in energy conservation and recycling.
In October 2022, Eastern Michigan received bronze recognition from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), which evaluates sustainability in higher education institutions.
Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University is one of Michigan's oldest public universities. It serves approximately 13,000 students across various disciplines through its multiple colleges and graduate school. National publications frequently recognize EMU for excellence and diversity in education.
