Eastern Michigan University has announced Aya Sabri, an international student from Yemen, as a 2024 Presidential Scholar. Sabri is among 21 students chosen for this prestigious award, which recognizes first-year students who excel academically and show leadership and community commitment.

"My college life would not have been the same if I hadn't been given this opportunity," Sabri expressed. "The scholarship equips me with the tools for self-development and a thriving future."

The EMU Presidential Scholarship, valued at up to $100,000, covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years. Recipients are active members of The Honors College at EMU, where they engage in critical thinking, community service, and leadership activities.

Sabri completed her education at Ajyal Almareefah International School while also earning an International General Certificate of Secondary Education from Britain. At Eastern Michigan University, she plans to study neuroscience. During high school, Sabri founded the External Students Help Team and contributed over 125 hours to community service projects such as the Joy and Happiness initiative for children.

Anne Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College at EMU, commented on the new scholars: "We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU this fall. They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries but share a passion for learning, service, and leadership."

In addition to her studies, Sabri collaborates with EMU chemistry professor Hedeel Evans on research projects. "This valuable opportunity means new experiences, skills, and abilities for me to learn and grow from," said Sabri.

Students interested in applying for the Presidential Scholarship can do so during their senior year of high school.

Founded in 1849 as Michigan's second oldest public university, Eastern Michigan University currently serves nearly 13,000 students across various degree programs. The institution is recognized nationally for its excellence in education.
