Eastern Michigan University is showcasing the achievements of its students, both academically and athletically. Senior Hugh Thorp, who lives with autism spectrum disorder, exemplifies determination as he pursues academic success and trains for the Boston Marathon. Originally from Mentor, Ohio, Thorp is studying journalism with a minor in public relations. Diagnosed in 2019 as high-functioning on the autism spectrum, he navigates challenges such as adapting to new environments and managing repetitive behaviors.

Thorp receives support from EMU’s Disability Resource Center. "A big part of why I chose to attend EMU was because of the Disability Resource Center," said Thorp. "It has been easy to get accommodations, and the people there have treated me well."

Currently training for the Consolidated National Security Corporation Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on November 9, Thorp dedicates three months to each marathon while maintaining a rigorous daily practice routine. His goal is to finish under three and a half hours in Indianapolis after completing the Detroit Marathon in 3 hours and 41 minutes.

Looking ahead, Thorp plans to participate in two marathons annually while pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. He aims for a career in sports information, combining his passion for academics and athletics.

As he prepares for the marathon, Thorp hopes to inspire others with similar diagnoses to pursue higher education. “There will be hard times that you may think aren’t fair... but fighting through those times will reward you the most," he stated.
