Eastern Michigan University biology professor Cara Shillington is conducting field research on tarantulas in La Junta, Colorado. Her work aims to alter public perceptions of arachnids by highlighting their ecological roles and behaviors.

Shillington's research focuses on the adaptive functions and sexual variation of tarantulas in their natural environment. She collaborates with the Southern Plains Land Trust to preserve the plains where these spiders live. "When you encounter tarantulas, they’re more afraid of you," Shillington explained. "Tarantulas only bite out of fear."

La Junta celebrates an annual festival during the tarantula mating season from September through November. The event includes a parade and features guest speakers like Shillington.

Shillington’s findings have influenced other scientific studies, including work by EMU graduate student Bradley Allendorfer, who expanded on her 2006 publication about Mexican tarantula species.

Eastern Michigan University, founded in 1849, serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines. The university is recognized for its commitment to applied education and diversity.
