Eastern Michigan University, in collaboration with local partners, recently hosted the annual "Thankful for You" Drive-Thru Giveaway. This event distributed Thanksgiving essentials such as turkey, ham, and fresh produce to 540 families. Held at the George Gervin GameAbove Center, the initiative highlighted the University's dedication to community support during the holiday season.
More than 50 volunteers participated in distributing over 15,000 pounds of food. For many recipients, this assistance was crucial during difficult times. A community member named Cody shared his experience: “Since Swoop’s Food Pantry has a first-come, first-served event this year, and my wife and I work, we can’t make that this year,” he said. “So, just being able to try and get food for my family means a lot and is worth the wait.”
Another participant expressed how the giveaway eased financial pressure following personal health challenges: “I recently had open heart surgery, and my left leg was amputated, so this is going to help me out tremendously because I have no income coming in.”
This marks the third year Eastern Michigan University has organized the Thankful event. It was sponsored by several organizations including the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation; James Smith and Connie Ruhl-Smith; Eastern Michigan University Credit Union; and Meijer.
The "Thankful For You" event is part of "Thank-Ful," an annual national program led by Chartwells, which manages EMU's E|Dining operations.
Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across various programs. It is recognized for its educational excellence and diversity.
