Eastern Michigan University's podcast "Enlighten U" has released its November episode, focusing on developmental and learning disabilities among college students. The episode includes practical strategies, inspiring stories, and expert advice for students living with these challenges.
Hugh Thorp, a senior journalism major at EMU who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), shares his experiences in this episode. He discusses how ASD affects his life as a student and offers insights into coping strategies. Thorp emphasizes the importance of seeking help when needed, stating, "Don’t be afraid to reach out. You may feel embarrassed, but it’s not embarrassing."
Statistics from the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network indicate that about 1 in every 36 children is diagnosed with ASD. Additionally, a survey by the National College Health Assessment reveals that approximately 4.7% of college students have ASD, while 5.5% have some form of learning disability.
Aesha Mustafa, Ph.D., an assistant professor in EMU’s Department of Leadership and Counseling, provides further context on these statistics and offers advice for both students and professors dealing with developmental disabilities. She states, “I feel like accommodations make everyone’s lives easier. It’s okay to help people succeed.”
Thorp also shares his personal achievements as a student intern in EMU's Athletics Department Office and as a marathon runner. He highlights perseverance as crucial to success: “When you make that decision to go forward, good things will happen to you.”
Future episodes of "Enlighten U" will cover topics such as adjusting to campus life and navigating transitions from high school to college.
