The December episode of Eastern Michigan University's "Enlighten U" podcast focuses on grief and loss, featuring EMU student-athlete Kyra Buffen. Buffen shares her personal experiences with grief, beginning with the loss of her mother during high school. She also discusses a friend's suicide, urging listeners to check on friends who appear strong.

According to the National Alliance for Children's Grief, about 6 million children in the U.S. will have lost a parent or close family member by age 18. Eastern Washington University data suggests around 60% of college students experience loss before graduation.

With the holiday season approaching, this episode examines how grief affects students throughout the year. Buffen reflects on her journey, stating, "Being so young, I don’t think I realized the impact then."

Aesha Mustafa, Ph.D., assistant professor at EMU's Department of Leadership and Counseling, contributes insights into grief stages and coping strategies. Mustafa emphasizes that there is no right way to grieve: "However you’re processing is okay."

Future episodes of "Enlighten U" will explore topics like loneliness and body insecurities.
