Eastern Michigan University has announced that Trevor Peterson Jr., from Canton, Michigan, has been named a Presidential Scholar for 2024. Peterson is among 21 students chosen for this honor, which recognizes first-year students who excel academically and demonstrate leadership and community commitment.

The EMU Presidential Scholarship is valued at up to $100,000 and covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years. Recipients are active members of The Honors College at EMU, engaging in opportunities for critical thinking, community involvement, and leadership.

"This scholarship has allowed me to receive the education I've always wanted and helps me achieve the career I've dreamed of," said Peterson. "I plan to put my all into my studies as a sign of respect towards Eastern because of this opportunity."

Peterson graduated from the Early College Alliance at EMU and is pursuing a degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering. In high school, he participated in various activities including football, tutoring math, involvement in the Black Student Union, fundraising for his school's golf team and marching band, working at Panera’s, and volunteering at Zaxs Auto Wash. He expressed interest in meeting others in his field of study and hopes to experience studying abroad.

He also engaged in community outreach through his church during high school. "Volunteering in my church's community allowed me to help people who lived unfortunate lives,” said Peterson. "We would go to people's houses and help them move, give them rides, help with chores, and take them on grocery store trips."

Currently at EMU, Peterson is involved with the National Society of Black Engineers club and the Eagle’s Filmmakers Association.

"We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU and the Honors College this fall,” said Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries but they all share a passion for learning, service, and leadership.”

The EMU Presidential Scholarship aligns with the University's mission to promote student success so students can reach their academic goals while making positive impacts globally.

Eligible students can apply for this scholarship during their senior year of high school. More information about the scholarship is available on its webpage.

Founded in 1849 as Michigan's second oldest public university, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines through its colleges. The university is recognized nationally for excellence in education.
