Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has been actively working to improve student retention rates, which have been on the rise nationally since 2020. One of EMU's initiatives is the Registration Blitz, an event aimed at simplifying the class registration process and supporting students in their academic journey.

"Retention rates are not just numbers," stated Calvin McFarland, associate vice president of Student Success and Academic Support Services. "They are a testament to our commitment to helping every student achieve their goals, build connections, and prepare for a successful future."

The Registration Blitz provides a centralized location where students can access immediate assistance from academic advisors, success coaches, and other campus resources. The event helps students choose courses, resolve registration holds, and address questions about their academic plans. This personalized support helps keep students on track for graduation and reduces barriers to registration.

Since its inception in 2013, the Registration Blitz has become integral to EMU’s Retention Initiative. In November 2024, attendance at the blitz increased by over 16% compared to the previous year, with 575 students from 60 different majors participating.

EMU's Retention Initiative has expanded since 2019 into a comprehensive campus-wide effort. Initiatives such as pop-up advising stations and celebrations of student milestones have led to a 7% increase in retention rates—from 82.6% in 2023 to 88.9% in 2024—highlighting EMU’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to both academic and personal growth.

The university holds a Registration Blitz every fall and winter semester; the next event is scheduled for late March.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University is one of Michigan's oldest public universities, serving nearly 13,000 students across various degree programs. National publications often recognize EMU for its excellence and commitment to education.
