From March 10 to March 14, Eastern Michigan University's Upshur Institute for Civic Education (UICE) will observe Civic Learning Week, aiming to emphasize the significance of civic education. The event focuses on educating students about democracy and their rights while promoting innovative and community-based approaches to teaching history.

"The teaching of civics should be celebrated as a patriotic endeavor," stated Brigid Beaubien, director of the UICE. "Civic learning empowers young people to own the past, take the helm, and chart a course toward the future with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society."

The institute encourages students to understand governmental operations at both national and local levels through place-based learning. This method involves active community engagement through service or involvement in local government. The UICE also supports professional development aimed at fostering responsible citizenship among graduates.

On March 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a luncheon will be held at Halle Library located at 955 W Circle Drive. This event seeks to inspire educators to integrate civic learning into their classrooms.

Beaubien expressed her hope that all students and educators would reflect on civic engagement during this week. "Celebrating Civic Learning Week is the perfect opportunity to work towards a stronger community at home that uplifts everyone."
