Eastern Michigan University's Digital Summer Clinic offers students a chance to gain practical experience and mentorship, aiming to prepare them for competitive careers in technology, marketing, and entrepreneurship. The program is now in its 11th year and operates under the university's Center for Digital Engagement in collaboration with Ann Arbor SPARK.
"Our goal with the Digital Summer Clinic is to provide students with real-world experience that translates directly into career opportunities," stated Bud Gibson, director of EMU’s Center for Digital Engagement. He emphasized that this initiative is more than an internship; it's a "career launchpad" designed to help students develop portfolios and build industry connections.
The clinic selects 48 participants each summer for paid internships involving digital marketing, UX design, branding, business strategy, and technology. Interns work on projects with startups supported by Ann Arbor SPARK, gaining skills sought after by employers.
Students from various educational backgrounds can apply until April 25 for the 2025 session through the clinic's website. Besides practical experience, interns receive mentorship from professionals at companies like Google and Pinterest. "We’ve managed to attract mentors passionate about helping interns from all backgrounds succeed," said Gibson.
The program has successfully transitioned many interns into full-time positions at major firms such as Google and Accenture. Former intern Josh Thompson now works at Ann Arbor SPARK and mentors new interns himself. Another success story is Michelle Karls who secured a UX design position during her internship.
Gibson anticipates high demand for the upcoming cycle due to the needs of smaller companies for skilled talent. The clinic will operate in a hybrid format from June 9 to August 8, offering $19 per hour for ten hours weekly work on projects like web development and digital marketing.
Eastern Michigan University was established in 1849 and serves nearly 13,000 students across diverse programs. The institution is recognized nationally for its commitment to applied education.
