Eastern Michigan University international student Treasure Affia has taken an unconventional path to advocate for women and students in Nigeria. She pursued a double major in psychology and women and gender studies, motivated by her desire to make a difference. However, her move from Nigeria to Michigan was not without difficulties.

Initially invited by her aunt, Affia's early days in Michigan were promising but soon turned challenging. Her living situation deteriorated as her aunt exhibited controlling behavior and eventually asked her to leave. This led Affia into isolation and loneliness.

"It was overwhelming, and I became mentally ill," said Affia. "I was scared to go anywhere, and when I saw someone who resembled my aunt, I would have a panic attack."

Affia's mental health struggles included suicidal ideation. "I was hoping to be in a dangerous situation like a car swiping me off the road," she shared.

Aesha Mustapha, resident therapist for Enlighten U, explains that suicidal thoughts can vary in intensity. Mustafa said these thoughts are complex: "It’s not just about not wanting to live—it’s about finding something worth living for." She encourages seeking help from mental health professionals.

For Affia, community became that vital support system. "Having people around to visit and someone to talk to—other than my mom back home—was life-changing," she said.

Attending Eastern Michigan University provided the academic grounding for Affia's advocacy work. She founded The Feminist Code and BloomSphere Foundation for Mental Health Awareness in Nigeria. Her courses at EMU inspired her nonprofit initiatives aimed at education and empowerment.

"My Feminist Theory class...inspired me to start my women’s community from a feminist perspective," she stated.

Eastern Michigan University offers over 300 majors through various colleges and is recognized nationally for its diversity and commitment to applied education.
