April's episode of Eastern Michigan University's podcast "Enlighten U" featured its first live audience recording, allowing students to engage with a panel of experts on mental health topics, notably stress and self-care. The episode capitalized on student inquiries, which were answered by professionals with both academic and personal insights into mental health maintenance.
Gavin Millard, a senior at Eastern Michigan University majoring in communications and public relations, shared his personal self-care approach, encouraging peers to build confidence and life balance. Millard remarked, "As a student, shows like these couldn’t mean more. For us, mental health issues often go unaddressed, so to connect with other students in the room was so powerful. I’m honored to be a student voice for mental health, and I hope people learned that they aren’t alone.”
Resident mental health expert and EMU assistant professor Aesha Mustafa provided guidance on identifying burnout and the significance of self-care practices, aligning with the episode's focus on these issues, as defined by the National Institute of Mental Health.
Lolita Cummings, professor of public relations and co-host of "Enlighten U," emphasized the necessity of student participation in addressing pertinent mental health topics. "The mission of 'Enlighten U' is to help our listeners improve their mental health and access valuable and supportive resources throughout that journey," said Cummings.
Co-host Melissa Thrasher, who also serves as EMU's executive director of media relations and social media, highlighted the collaborative nature of the episode. "This event’s success was truly a team effort," said Thrasher. "I hope the powerful messages shared by our students and panelists leave a lasting impact on the audience, inspiring them to lead balanced and fulfilling lives.”
Future episodes of "Enlighten U" will continue to tackle various mental health concerns, including overcoming adversity, body insecurities, and optimism.
