Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is advancing its sustainability efforts with the implementation of its Energy Conservation Measure (ECM) program, which enters its second phase this summer. The university has also initiated the Path Forward Initiative, a long-term plan aimed at modernizing campus utility infrastructure and enhancing energy efficiency. This initiative is in collaboration with CenTrio and global sustainability consultant Ramboll Group, focusing on a comprehensive assessment of EMU's infrastructure to support environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.

The Path Forward Initiative was launched following EMU’s 2023 partnership with CenTrio. It evaluates campus utilities while exploring new energy solutions to meet both current and future demands. The initiative involves assessing 1,000 pieces of equipment across more than 50 buildings to create a detailed conditions report, screening energy solutions to optimize sustainability outcomes, and scenario modeling for strategic energy use planning.

EMU's commitment extends beyond planning as it advances key capital improvement projects. More than half of the projects for 2024-25 are already complete, with all remaining initiatives on track to finish within the fiscal year. Key improvements include enhanced utility tunnel safety through structural repairs, boiler replacements and control system upgrades for improved efficiency and reduced emissions, assessments of operational savings for new energy efficiency opportunities, and major electrical and water system evaluations.

Looking forward to 2026, capital improvement projects will expand on these advancements with tunnel upgrades, boiler improvements, and a feasibility study for transitioning from fuel oil to cleaner natural gas solutions.

Immediate infrastructure enhancements are underway at EMU to improve sustainability and reduce carbon emissions. Notable projects include demolitions at Jones and Goddard as well as Brown and Munson residence halls, with site grading complete and landscaping scheduled for Summer 2025. Underground electrical projects are also scheduled to begin by Summer 2025.

EMU is making strides in energy efficiency through its ECM program aiming for a 17.5% Energy-Use Intensity reduction — equivalent to removing approximately 2,500 gas-powered vehicles from the road or reducing the equivalent energy usage of 1,700 homes annually. By Summer 2025, upgrades such as LED lighting retrofits will be completed across multiple campus buildings.

The university is working to improve its AASHE STARS rating after receiving a bronze rating in 2022 that placed it among the top 5% of U.S. universities. Additionally, a student sustainability internship program focused on STARS data collection provides students hands-on experience in environmental planning.

With ongoing infrastructure improvements and strategic planning efforts underway, Eastern Michigan University remains committed to sustainability progress.
