May's episode of Eastern Michigan University's "Enlighten U" podcast explores the impact of optimism and positivity on mental health. The podcast, aimed at students, highlights research from the National Library of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic, indicating that positive thinking can reduce stress, lower depression risk, and improve psychological well-being.

Shayla Mostyn, an EMU junior studying sociology with minors in Jewish studies and journalism, is featured for her successful TikTok page promoting positivity. With over 200,000 followers, Mostyn shares how positive feedback inspires her to continue creating content. She also discusses dealing with negative comments by focusing on whose opinions truly matter.

Aesha Mustafa, Ph.D., assistant professor in EMU’s Department of Leadership and Counseling, addresses potential downsides of ignoring others' struggles while being positive. Mustafa emphasizes recognizing good things amidst challenges as a way to combat despair.

Both guests agree that maintaining positivity doesn't eliminate negative emotions but involves accepting difficulties while remaining hopeful about improvement.

The June episode will focus on body sensitivity before the podcast returns in September for its third season. For further details or to contribute ideas or guest suggestions, contact Lolita Cummings or Melissa Thrasher via email.
