Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead has expressed concerns over the state's budget growth and urged for a reduction in government spending. Following the annual May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference, Bumstead released a statement highlighting the need for caution as the Legislature advances in the budget process.

Bumstead noted, "As the Legislature moves forward in the state budget process, it is important that we proceed with caution and be mindful of the realities facing families and seniors across Michigan who continue to tighten their own household budgets against higher costs of living."

He pointed out that the state budget has increased by more than 40% over six years, which he believes is unsustainable. "We must act responsibly to roll back government spending and avoid increasing the tax burden on struggling Michiganders," he stated.

Despite these concerns, Bumstead remains optimistic about investing in key areas such as infrastructure, education, and public safety while providing relief from rising costs. "I believe it is possible to invest in our common priorities... I remain hopeful that we can work together to do what’s right for the people of Michigan," he added.
