City of Ann Arbor recently issued the following announcement.
Want to avoid having a Brown Friday following Thanksgiving?
Like human arteries, the pipes in your house and the city's sanitary sewer system won't work if they are clogged. Fortunately, most clogged pipes are 100% preventable. The first step is to prevent fats, oil, grease and "flushable wipes" from getting in the pipes to begin with. Follow these tips to keep things flowing:
•Never pour grease, turkey drippings, or cooking oil down drains. They solidify in pipes and block drains.
•Don’t put potato peels, poultry skins, bones, rice or pasta down the garbage disposal. Disposals can handle small quantities of scraps, but most food should go into the trash can or compost pile.
•Make sure the disposal is running when you add food scraps.
•Don’t flush baby wipes or Clorox wipes down toilets. Even though marketed as “flushable,” wipes won’t dissolve and can clog pipes.
