Eastern Michigan University hosts discussion on combating dating violence

Eastern Michigan University is organizing a community discussion focused on dating violence and sexual assault. The event, scheduled for November 20, 2024, will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Center, Ballroom B. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving EMU’s Special Victims Unit, SafeHouse Center, and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Andrea Elliott, community engagement officer and Special Victims Unit investigator at Eastern Michigan University, emphasized the importance of this event by stating: "Raising awareness about dating violence and sexual assault is a priority for our community. This event offers a safe space for individuals to learn, ask questions, and access necessary resources. We’re committed to making sure everyone feels supported and informed."

The discussion will include contributions from experts associated with the EMU Police Department, Title IX office, Women’s Resource Center, and Counseling and Psychological Services. Key topics will cover identifying signs of dating violence and sexual assault as well as understanding their impact on victims. Additionally, attendees will learn about available resources and support systems for students and the wider community.

This free event is open to EMU students, faculty members, staff, and local residents. Participants are expected to gain valuable insights into preventing and addressing issues related to dating violence and sexual assault.
