Eastern Michigan University has announced that it will close on Tuesday, January 21, due to extreme cold temperatures and below-zero wind chill warnings. The decision aims to ensure the safety of the university community.
The closure means that all course activities, including class sessions, exams, and assignment submissions, are canceled unless they were already scheduled as 100% online and asynchronous. Additionally, all employee meetings are canceled, even those planned to occur via Zoom. Employees are advised not to conduct regular work duties in line with the university's weather policy and relevant collective bargaining agreements.
However, certain designated employees who are essential for campus operations may still be required to work. This includes staff from the heating plant, physical plant, food service, public safety, WEMU, and other specific areas of the university.
Despite the closure, residence halls and apartments will remain open. Campus dining services will continue at select locations; updates can be found on the EDining website.
Students involved in off-campus placements such as teaching or clinical settings should follow their placement coordinator or onsite instructor's instructions.
During severe weather closures like this one, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to check their emich.edu email accounts and the main university website for further updates. Detailed guidelines on campus closures can also be accessed on the university's closure website.
