Eastern Michigan University is introducing a new initiative called "Same Page" to assist students in managing their relationships. The program will feature events, a podcast, social media initiatives, and discussions aimed at helping students build healthy connections and address relationship challenges.
Research from the National Library of Medicine indicates that friendships can have a positive impact on academic performance, while unhealthy relationships may negatively affect grades. Dwight Hamilton, chief diversity officer at Eastern Michigan University, stated, "All of us have seen the challenges that students have with connecting with others in platonic and romantic relationships." He added that lonely students or those in difficult relationships might feel less connected to campus life or experience academic difficulties.
The first event under this initiative is titled "Same Page: Player 2 Loading," scheduled for Friday, March 21. It will include speed-friending activities designed to help students develop communication skills in a safe environment. The event will take place at the Student Center Ballroom from 6 to 8 p.m., offering opportunities for students to win prizes and learn about building healthy relationships.
The "Same Page" initiative is a collaboration between the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Campus Life, and Counseling & Psychological Services. Rhada Bhatt, a clinical social worker specializing in relationship issues based in Ypsilanti, will be available to answer student questions.
Maya El-Amin, a student committee member involved with the initiative said, “College is hard, and it's even harder when struggling to navigate relationships and connections.” She emphasized the program's goal of easing the burden of forming and maintaining connections.
Students interested in submitting relationship questions can do so through the program's platform.
Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 as Michigan's second oldest public university.
